From the editors of a prestigious academic journal, who have had my article since April . . .
Dear [name deleted]:
I'm very sorry the review of your submission has taken so long. I was slow out of the starting blocks, and the referees have delayed things further.
I sent your piece out to four scholars with the relevant expertise. One turned in his or her report. Another gave me an assessment verbally but I'm still waiting for a written report. I'm also still waiting for reports from two other referees. All of the readers have received reminders.
This is my last day before going on leave for a year. I have discussed your file with my replacement, [name deleted]. He will work to get at least two more reports, and get you a decision in July.
Again, I regret this long delay.
Sincerely,
[name deleted]
The pace of scholarship is truly glacial.
But on the bright side, the history librarian here has finally, finally taken note of the couch situation.
A couple of additional notes: I have had some old furniture taken out of the room, and am looking into finding something nicer. I’m not sure what is possible pending the [library] renovation, but would welcome suggestions – I hear, for instance, that some of you miss the brown couch. I am also hoping to find a few more decent office chairs, since we have more carrels than chairs at the moment.
Indeed.
